Ultrasound Tech Job Summary

Cowley WY ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Cowley WY clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work tasks of an ultrasound tech can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Cowley WY ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools sponsor through Cowley WY clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Wyoming or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonographer Schools

student attending online sonography class in Cowley WYAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Practical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Cowley WY outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be attended online in your Cowley home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are often less expensive than on campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But similarly as with any sonography college you are considering, confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Cowley WY ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Cowley WY area. Certainly location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Cowley WY health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the ultrasound technician colleges you are assessing have associations with Cowley WY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Cowley healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Wyoming healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Cowley WY residence. Those who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  program you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Cowley WY area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
