Newcastle WY sonographer performing ultrasoundSince you have decided to obtain an ultrasound technician degree near Newcastle WY, the next step is to start the process of picking a school. First, you need to find the right program that will provide the necessary instruction to become a qualified professional. So it’s very important that you investigate each program so that you can evaluate and compare your choices. But just where does one begin? A number of prospective students will start by looking for schools that are within travelling distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Certainly location and cost must be considered when arriving at a decision, but there are other important factors also. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they provide internships. These and other qualifiers will be covered more in detail later in this post. But to start with, let’s go over what a sonogram tech does and the credentials and online training options that are offered.

Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Newcastle WY ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Newcastle WY hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Newcastle WY ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools set up through Newcastle WY hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Wyoming or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonographer Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Newcastle WYAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Newcastle WY hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the training and classes may be attended online in your Newcastle home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are many times more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But just as with any ultrasound tech school you are considering, verify that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Newcastle WY ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Newcastle WY area. Clearly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound tech schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Newcastle WY health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the ultrasound technician programs you are reviewing have associations with Newcastle WY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Newcastle health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Wyoming healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Newcastle WY residence. Those who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Newcastle WY area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
