Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Ranchester WY ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Ranchester WY hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work tasks of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Ranchester WY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to complete. Another option for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many schools set up with Ranchester WY hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Wyoming or whichever state you elect to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Ranchester WYAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off campus facility. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Ranchester WY outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Ranchester home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are often less costly than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But just as with any ultrasound tech school you are considering, make sure that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Ranchester WY ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Ranchester WY area. Certainly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional things that you must also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Ranchester WY health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are interested in have relationships with Ranchester WY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Ranchester healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Wyoming healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Ranchester WY home. Students who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  program you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Ranchester WY area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
