Sonogram Tech Occupation Description

Yoder WY ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Yoder WY hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work duties of an ultrasound tech may include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Yoder WY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that most sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges sponsor through Yoder WY clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Wyoming or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Yoder WYAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Yoder WY hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the balance of the classes and training can be attended online in your Yoder home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently more affordable than on campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But just as with any sonography college you are considering, check that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Yoder WY ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Yoder WY area. Obviously location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are additional things that you should also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed review of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Yoder WY health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram technician programs you are interested in have partnerships with Yoder WY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Yoder medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Wyoming healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Yoder WY home. Students who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Yoder WY area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
