Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Cassandra PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Cassandra PA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work functions of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Cassandra PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that almost all sonographer programs do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges organize through Cassandra PA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Cassandra PAAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Cassandra PA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Cassandra home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are often less costly than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But just as with any sonographer school you are looking at, check that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Cassandra PA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Cassandra PA area. Clearly location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound tech schools have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Cassandra PA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are interested in have associations with Cassandra PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Cassandra health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Cassandra PA residence. Those who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  program you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Cassandra PA area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
