Somerville AL sonographer performing ultrasoundNow that you have made a decision to obtain an ultrasound technician degree near Somerville AL, the next step is to begin the process of picking a college. First, you need to find the right program that will furnish the proper instruction to become a qualified professional. And since a number of states do mandate that ultrasound techs be either licensed or certified, depending on where you will practice you may also need preparation to pass a licensing or certification exam. So it’s very important that you research each program so that you can assess and compare your choices. But exactly where does one start? Many prospective students will begin by looking for colleges that are within driving distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Of course location and cost need to be considered when making a decision, but there are other critical factors also. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they offer internship programs. These and additional qualifications will be discussed more in detail later in this article. But to start with, let’s review what an ultrasound tech does and the degrees and online education options that are available.

Sonogram Tech Occupation Description

Somerville AL ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Somerville AL clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work functions of an ultrasound tech can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Somerville AL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that almost all sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges set up through Somerville AL hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Alabama or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Somerville ALAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Somerville AL hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the balance of the classes and training can be attended online in your Somerville home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less costly than on campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But just as with any ultrasound tech program you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Somerville AL ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Somerville AL area. Of course location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Somerville AL health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound technician programs you are reviewing have associations with Somerville AL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Somerville medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Alabama healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Somerville AL residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Somerville AL area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
