Ultrasound Technician Work Summary

Holbrook AZ ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Holbrook AZ hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work tasks of a sonogram tech can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Holbrook AZ ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many schools set up through Holbrook AZ hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Arizona or whatever state you choose to work in.

Sonographer Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Holbrook AZAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Holbrook AZ outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Holbrook home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times less costly than traditional options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But just as with every sonography school you are looking at, confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Holbrook AZ ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Holbrook AZ area. Naturally location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other variables that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Holbrook AZ employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the ultrasound technician colleges you are reviewing have partnerships with Holbrook AZ hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Holbrook medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Arizona healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Holbrook AZ home. Those who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Holbrook AZ area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.

    Holbrook, Arizona

Holbrook (Navajo: Tʼiisyaakin) is a city in Navajo County, Arizona, United States. According to the 2010 census, the population of the city was 5,053.[3] The city is the county seat of Navajo County.[5]

The Holbrook area was inhabited first by the Anasazi, then Puebloans, then the Navajo and Apache. In 1540 (some seventy years before Jamestown or the Pilgrims) Coronado searched for the Seven Cities of Cibola and camped some sixty miles east of Holbrook. Coronado sent an expedition west to find the Colorado River, and they crossed the Little Colorado some twenty-five miles east of Holbrook and found a wonderland of colors they named "El Desierto Pintada" - The Painted Desert. The expedition was then led by the Hopis to the Grand Canyon.

After the Mexican–American War ended in 1848 the area was ceded to the United States. From 1851 to 1857 the U.S. Army sent three expeditions along the 35th parallel, the third led by Lt. Beale who created a ten foot wide wagon road. The area was known as Navajo Springs, after a spring a dozen miles northeast of Holbrook. Soon afterwards a store and saloon were established at the confluence of the Rio Puerco and Little Colorado Rivers two miles east of Holbrook, and the area became known as Horsehead Crossing.
