No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Kenwood CA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work functions of an ultrasound tech may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Kenwood CA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that most sonographer programs do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools sponsor through Kenwood CA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in California or whatever state you choose to work in.

Online Sonographer Colleges

Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Kenwood CA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Kenwood home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently less costly than traditional alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech program you are considering, confirm that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Kenwood CA area. Obviously location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are other factors that you should also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Kenwood CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the sonogram tech programs you are reviewing have associations with Kenwood CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Kenwood healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they select will have to be within driving distance of their Kenwood CA residence. Students who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Kenwood CA area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
