Sonogram Tech Work Description

Redcrest CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Redcrest CA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job tasks of an ultrasound technician may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Available

Redcrest CA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to complete. Another option for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that almost all sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools organize through Redcrest CA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in California or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Classes

student attending online sonography class in Redcrest CAAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Redcrest CA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Redcrest home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times more affordable than on campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But just as with every sonographer college you are looking at, check that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Redcrest CA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Redcrest CA area. Naturally location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other variables that you should also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound tech schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive examination of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Redcrest CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram technician schools you are assessing have relationships with Redcrest CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to receive hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the Redcrest healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Redcrest CA home. Those who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Redcrest CA area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
