Marlborough CT sonographer performing ultrasoundSince you have decided to obtain an ultrasound technician degree near Marlborough CT, the next step is to begin the procedure of choosing a college. To begin with, you have to find the right program that will furnish the necessary training to become a qualified professional. And given that a number of states do require that sonographers be either certified or licensed, depending on where you will practice you may also need to be prepared to pass a licensing or certification examination. So it’s extremely important that you investigate each program in order to assess and compare your choices. But just where does one start? Many students will begin by looking for colleges that are within driving distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Of course cost and location should be taken into account when making a decision, but there are other critical factors also. Such as, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they provide internships. These and other qualifications will be discussed more in detail later in this post. But to start with, let’s go over what an ultrasound tech does and the credentials and online education programs that are available.

Sonographer Work Description

Marlborough CT ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Marlborough CT clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job duties of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Marlborough CT ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that most sonographer programs do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools set up through Marlborough CT clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Connecticut or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Classes

student attending online sonography class in Marlborough CTAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Marlborough CT hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Marlborough home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are often less costly than on-campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But just as with every sonography school you are reviewing, check that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Marlborough CT ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Marlborough CT area. Certainly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other things that you should also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Marlborough CT health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the sonogram technician programs you are assessing have partnerships with Marlborough CT hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the Marlborough medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Connecticut healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Marlborough CT residence. Students who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Marlborough CT area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.

Other preferred skills include technical proficiency, the ability to keep collected when confronted by an angry or anxious patient and the ability to converse in a clear and compassionate manner. Marlborough is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. It contains the census-designated place (CDP) of Terramuggus. The town's population was 6,404 at the 2010 census.[1] Marlborough is a middle class suburban and rural community. The local high school is RHAM High School. In 2013, Marlborough ranked third (of 24) in Connecticut Magazine's biannual ranking of Connecticut small towns, median home sale price between $175,000 and $224,999.[2] Educationally, RHAM High School, which serves Marlborough, Hebron, and Andover students, was the top-ranked regional high school in the state on the SAT in 2017, and 11th highest-performing school in the state on the test.[3]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 23.5 square miles (60.9 km2), of which 23.4 square miles (60.5 km2) is land and 0.15 square miles (0.4 km2), or 0.73%, is water.[1] Marlborough is adjacent to four other Connecticut towns (Glastonbury to the north, East Hampton to the west, Colchester to the south, and Hebron to the east). Route 2, a two-lane highway (sometimes three) in most sections, bisects the town, and there are three Marlborough exits, at South Main Street, Route 66, and West Road, although there are exits westbound only for South Main and eastbound only for West Road. It takes approximately 15– 20 minutes to get to Hartford, 40 minutes to New London, 45 minutes to New Haven, and 40 minutes to Springfield, MA. Marlborough is generally equidistant between Boston and New York. Boston is an hour and 45 minutes away, while New York City is a two-hour car ride, pending traffic conditions. Popular vacation areas are also reasonable drives from Marlborough. The Berkshire Mountains are an hour and 20 minutes away, and popular Rhode Island beaches, depending on which one you go to, are an hour (Misquamicut, Westerly) to an hour and 20 minutes away (Narragansett).
