Ultrasound Tech Work Description

Bronson FL ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Bronson FL hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job tasks of a sonogram technician can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Bronson FL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges organize through Bronson FL hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Florida or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Bronson FLAs previously mentioned, almost all sonogram technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Bronson FL outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be attended online in your Bronson home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But just as with any sonographer school you are considering, check that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Bronson FL ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Bronson FL area. Obviously location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed review of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Bronson FL employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the ultrasound tech colleges you are reviewing have associations with Bronson FL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist students and graduates form professional relationships in the Bronson health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Florida healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will need to be within driving distance of their Bronson FL residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Bronson FL area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
