Gibsonton FL ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Gibsonton FL hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job functions of an ultrasound tech may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Gibsonton FL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools sponsor with Gibsonton FL hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Florida or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Gibsonton FLAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Gibsonton FL outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Gibsonton home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less costly than on campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But just as with any sonographer college you are considering, verify that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Gibsonton FL ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Gibsonton FL area. Naturally location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Gibsonton FL health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the sonogram tech programs you are assessing have relationships with Gibsonton FL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may assist graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Gibsonton medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Florida healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Gibsonton FL home. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  program you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Gibsonton FL area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
