Interlachen FL ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Interlachen FL clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job functions of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort

  • Assessing results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Interlachen FL ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools organize through Interlachen FL clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Florida or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Schools

student attending online sonography class in Interlachen FLAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Practical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Interlachen FL hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Interlachen home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less expensive than on-campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But similarly as with every sonography school you are considering, verify that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Interlachen FL ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Interlachen FL area. Obviously location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Interlachen FL health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the ultrasound technician colleges you are reviewing have relationships with Interlachen FL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional connections in the Interlachen medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Florida healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Interlachen FL home. Those who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  program you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Interlachen FL area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
