Sonogram Tech Job Description

Port Richey FL ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Port Richey FL hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work functions of an ultrasound tech can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Port Richey FL ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many schools set up with Port Richey FL clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Florida or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Port Richey FLAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Port Richey FL hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Port Richey home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are often more affordable than on campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But similarly as with every sonographer program you are considering, confirm that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Port Richey FL area. Of course location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are other things that you must also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound tech colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Port Richey FL health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound technician colleges you are reviewing have associations with Port Richey FL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students establish professional connections in the Port Richey medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Florida healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Port Richey FL residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  school you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Port Richey FL area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
