Sonogram Tech Job Summary

Port Orange FL ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Port Orange FL hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work tasks of an ultrasound tech may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for further testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Port Orange FL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Port Orange FL hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Florida or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Schools

student attending online sonography class in Port Orange FLAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Port Orange FL hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Port Orange home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently more affordable than on campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be lessened as well. But just as with any sonography school you are considering, make sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Port Orange FL ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Port Orange FL area. Certainly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech schools have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Port Orange FL health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the ultrasound tech colleges you are evaluating have relationships with Port Orange FL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Port Orange medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Florida healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Port Orange FL residence. Students who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Port Orange FL area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
