Ultrasound Technician Occupation Summary

Waverly FL ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Waverly FL hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Waverly FL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor with Waverly FL hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Florida or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Waverly FLAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Waverly FL hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the classes and training can be attended online in your Waverly home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less costly than traditional alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But just as with every ultrasound tech college you are considering, check that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Waverly FL ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Waverly FL area. Clearly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are other things that you must also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are some questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Waverly FL employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram tech schools you are evaluating have relationships with Waverly FL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to receive hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Waverly medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Florida healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Waverly FL home. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Waverly FL area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
