Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Greensboro GA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work duties of an ultrasound tech may include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure

  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Available

Greensboro GA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that most sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools set up through Greensboro GA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Georgia or whatever state you choose to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Greensboro GAAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Greensboro GA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes can be attended online in your Greensboro home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be lessened also. But similarly as with any sonography program you are reviewing, verify that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Greensboro GA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Greensboro GA area. Certainly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are other things that you should also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous review of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Greensboro GA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have relationships with Greensboro GA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist graduates and students form professional relationships in the Greensboro health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Georgia healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Greensboro GA home. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Greensboro GA area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
