Ultrasound Tech Work Summary

Greenville GA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Greenville GA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job functions of a sonogram tech can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Greenville GA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finish. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor through Greenville GA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Georgia or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonographer Schools

student attending online sonography class in Greenville GAAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Greenville GA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be attended online in your Greenville home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are many times less costly than traditional alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech program you are considering, verify that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Greenville GA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Greenville GA area. Clearly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive review of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Greenville GA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram tech programs you are interested in have associations with Greenville GA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Greenville medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Georgia healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Greenville GA residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  program you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Greenville GA area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
