Ultrasound Tech Occupation Description

Unadilla GA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Unadilla GA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job duties of an ultrasound tech can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Unadilla GA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools organize through Unadilla GA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Georgia or whatever state you choose to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Unadilla GAAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an approved off-campus facility. Practical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Unadilla GA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Unadilla home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are often less costly than traditional options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech school you are looking at, confirm that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Unadilla GA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Unadilla GA area. Clearly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are other factors that you should also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech schools have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Unadilla GA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have associations with Unadilla GA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Unadilla health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Georgia healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Unadilla GA residence. Those who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Unadilla GA area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
