Sonographer Work Description

Eleele HI ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Eleele HI hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for further testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Eleele HI ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that most sonographer programs do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools organize with Eleele HI clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Hawaii or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Eleele HIAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Eleele HI hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes may be attended online in your Eleele home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times more affordable than traditional alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But similarly as with any sonographer program you are reviewing, verify that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Eleele HI ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Eleele HI area. Certainly location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Eleele HI health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the sonogram technician programs you are reviewing have relationships with Eleele HI hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Eleele healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Hawaii healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will need to be within driving distance of their Eleele HI residence. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  program you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Eleele HI area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
