Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Bardolph IL ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Bardolph IL clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job duties of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Bardolph IL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Bardolph IL hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Illinois or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonographer Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Bardolph ILAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Bardolph IL hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the balance of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Bardolph home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less costly than on campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech program you are considering, verify that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the right option for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Bardolph IL ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Bardolph IL area. Naturally location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Bardolph IL employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have relationships with Bardolph IL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Bardolph health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Illinois healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Bardolph IL residence. Students who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Bardolph IL area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
