Ultrasound Technician Job Summary

Barry IL ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Barry IL hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job functions of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Barry IL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous schools set up through Barry IL clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Illinois or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Sonographer Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Barry ILAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus facility. Practical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Barry IL hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Barry home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times less expensive than traditional options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But similarly as with every sonography program you are reviewing, check that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Barry IL ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Barry IL area. Obviously location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other things that you should also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Barry IL employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are interested in have associations with Barry IL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Barry medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Illinois healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Barry IL home. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Barry IL area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
