Most potential students will begin by searching for schools that are within driving distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Of course location and cost must be taken into account when making a decision, but there are other significant factors as well. For instance, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they offer internships. These and additional qualifications will be addressed more in depth later in this post. Ultrasound Tech Occupation Summary

Bedford Park IL ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Bedford Park IL hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job tasks of an ultrasound tech may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Bedford Park IL ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools sponsor through Bedford Park IL clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Illinois or whatever state you elect to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Bedford Park ILAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Bedford Park IL outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Bedford Park home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are often more affordable than on campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But similarly as with every sonography school you are looking at, check that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the right option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Bedford Park IL ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Bedford Park IL area. Certainly location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed review of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Bedford Park IL employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the sonogram tech colleges you are reviewing have relationships with Bedford Park IL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Bedford Park medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Illinois healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Bedford Park IL home. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Bedford Park IL area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
