Sonographer Occupation Summary

Burbank IL ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Burbank IL hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job duties of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Burbank IL ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that most sonographer colleges do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools set up through Burbank IL hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Illinois or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Programs

student attending online sonography class in Burbank ILAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Burbank IL hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Burbank home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are often more affordable than traditional alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But similarly as with every sonography program you are considering, make sure that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Burbank IL ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Burbank IL area. Obviously location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you should also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Burbank IL health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the sonogram technician colleges you are interested in have associations with Burbank IL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist graduates and students form professional relationships in the Burbank health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Illinois healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Burbank IL residence. Students who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Burbank IL area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.

    Burbank, Illinois

Burbank is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 28,925 at the 2010 census. It is located at the southwest edge of the city of Chicago; the Chicago city limit – specifically that of the Ashburn neighborhood – is in common with Burbank's eastern city limit. Burbank shares a boundary with Oak Lawn to its south, Bridgeview to its west, and Bedford Park to its north; the city of Hometown is also adjacent to Burbank's southeast corner. Burbank is less than two miles south of Chicago Midway International Airport.

In 1850, the area which would become the city of Burbank, then largely uninhabited and agrarian, became part of Lyons Township. Over the next hundred years the area remained largely undeveloped, though several times large plans were laid out for the area, never to come to fruition. In the late 19th century a railroad investor named A. B. Stickney planned a large railroad transfer center which included what became the northern part of Burbank, but his ideas were never realized due to an economic depression in 1893.

In the 1920s, the area became an attractive site for real-estate developers who bought up farmland and built subdivisions. However, ongoing drainage problems, practically nonexistent water and sewage systems and the Great Depression kept Burbank largely unbuilt and empty until the 1950s.
