Bunker Hill IL ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Bunker Hill IL hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work tasks of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Bunker Hill IL ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another option for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges set up with Bunker Hill IL hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Illinois or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Bunker Hill ILAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Bunker Hill IL outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Bunker Hill home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are often more affordable than traditional alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But just as with every ultrasound tech college you are reviewing, verify that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Bunker Hill IL ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Bunker Hill IL area. Certainly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Bunker Hill IL health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the sonogram technician programs you are assessing have relationships with Bunker Hill IL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Bunker Hill health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Illinois healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they select will need to be within driving distance of their Bunker Hill IL residence. Those who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Bunker Hill IL area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.

    Bunker Hill, Illinois

As Euro-Americans arrived in Macoupin County, the site of the future Bunker Hill was settled in 1830. At that time, the area was known as Wolf Ridge, due to the presence of wolves in the vicinity. The first settler was Elijah Lincoln in 1830, who established a land claim one and a half miles southwest of present Bunker Hill. Shortly after he made his claim, Lincoln and a Mr. Tuttle laid out a town, named Lincoln after the first settler. The earliest post office in the area was established in 1833 a mile south of Lincoln. A school house was built around 1831, and was also used as the meeting hall for the Baptist denomination. The first church in the area was built by the Baptists. The second was the Congregational Church in nearby Woodburn.

In 1834, County Surveyor Luke Knowlton entered 80 acres (320,000 m2) of land that now cover the center of Bunker Hill. On 25 December 1835, Moses True of Salisbury, New Hampshire, John Tilden of Boston, Massachusetts, and Robert Smith of Alton, Illinois visited Lincoln and formed a company to plat a town and improve the surrounding countryside. By 1836, the settlement of Lincoln had been abandoned, prompting Moses and company to establish a new town, which became Bunker Hill in 1837.

At 6:45am CST on 19 March 1948, a tornado that originated in Alton, Illinois blew through Bunker Hill, destroying the majority of the town's buildings and killing nineteen people. Although the tornado was only in town for less than a minute, the destruction was devastating. The downtown business district lost many of its buildings. The streets were impassable due to rubble from the storm. The newly renovated Meissner School was one of few buildings virtually undamaged by the tornado. A first aid station was set up in the school, with a temporary morgue in another classroom. By 9:00 am, ambulances from Alton, Carlinville, Litchfield, and Gillespie arrived to transport the injured to local hospitals. By the end of the day, National Guard units, US Army units, the Red Cross, Salvation Army, American Legion, VFW, and Illinois State Police had arrived to restore order and provide assistance to the citizens of Bunker Hill.
