Sonogram Tech Work Description

Du Bois IL ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Du Bois IL hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job duties of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Du Bois IL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many schools set up with Du Bois IL clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Illinois or whichever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Du Bois ILAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Du Bois IL outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Du Bois home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently less costly than traditional alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But just as with any ultrasound tech college you are considering, check that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Du Bois IL ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Du Bois IL area. Clearly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other things that you must also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous review of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Du Bois IL employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the sonogram tech programs you are reviewing have associations with Du Bois IL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist students and graduates develop professional connections in the Du Bois healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Illinois healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Du Bois IL home. Students who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Du Bois IL area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
