Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Holcomb IL ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Holcomb IL clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job functions of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Holcomb IL ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools organize with Holcomb IL hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Illinois or whichever state you decide to work in.

Sonographer Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Holcomb ILAs previously mentioned, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Holcomb IL hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Holcomb home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently less expensive than traditional options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But similarly as with every sonography college you are reviewing, verify that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Holcomb IL ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Holcomb IL area. Of course location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are other things that you should also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Holcomb IL health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the sonogram technician programs you are reviewing have partnerships with Holcomb IL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Holcomb medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Illinois healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Holcomb IL residence. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  program you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Holcomb IL area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.

    Randy Holcomb

Randy Holcomb was born at St. Luke Presbyterian hospital on Chicago's near west side to a middle-class family. He is the oldest of children between his parents, with a younger sister Deborah and his brother Marcus. He spent most of his early life on Chicago's west side with his parents Gloria and Randy Sr., both of whom were Chicago police officers. His mother attended a Baptist church where a young Randy found a love for the drums and eventually started playing at the church. Soon after, Randy Sr. started a rap group composed of three Chicago police officers that travelled the country promoting peace between Police Departments and inter-city citizens. The movement was moderately successful and led to the trio being co-producers of the hit series New York Undercover.

His family moved to Chicago's south side where Randy would get his first taste of organized basketball at St. Thomas More elementary school. Randy's rapid growth led to him taking to the sport in addition to wanting to be like his older cousin Herman Jordan, who was a high school stand out and a playground legend in Chicago.

Holcomb founded Alfred's House,[1] a luxury leather goods fashion house inspired by vintage Americana sport.[2] Holcomb also works on urban development projects that bring national retailers to areas that are blighted (most notably those in Chicago, IL).
