Sonogram Tech Work Description

Kirkwood IL ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Kirkwood IL hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Kirkwood IL ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that most sonographer schools do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor with Kirkwood IL clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Illinois or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Classes

student attending online sonography class in Kirkwood ILAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Kirkwood IL hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Kirkwood home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently more affordable than traditional options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But similarly as with any sonography college you are looking at, verify that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right option for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Kirkwood IL ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Kirkwood IL area. Of course location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Kirkwood IL health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound technician schools you are evaluating have partnerships with Kirkwood IL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist graduates and students form professional relationships in the Kirkwood healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Illinois healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Kirkwood IL home. Students who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Kirkwood IL area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
