Riverside IL ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Riverside IL clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job tasks of an ultrasound tech can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Riverside IL ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges set up with Riverside IL clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Illinois or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Riverside ILAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Riverside IL hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be attended online in your Riverside home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently less costly than on-campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech school you are considering, verify that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Riverside IL ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Riverside IL area. Obviously location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are several questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Riverside IL health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound technician programs you are interested in have associations with Riverside IL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist students and graduates form professional relationships in the Riverside healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Illinois healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Riverside IL residence. Those who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  school you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Riverside IL area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
