Sonographer Occupation Summary

Amite LA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Amite LA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work functions of a sonogram tech can include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Amite LA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer schools do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many schools set up through Amite LA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Louisiana or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Sonographer Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Amite LAAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Amite LA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the training and classes can be attended online in your Amite home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are often less costly than on campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But similarly as with any sonographer college you are reviewing, confirm that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal choice for you.

So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Amite LA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the sonogram tech colleges you are reviewing have associations with Amite LA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Louisiana healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will have to be within driving distance of their Amite LA home. Students who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Amite LA area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
