Columbia LA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Columbia LA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work tasks of an ultrasound tech may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges organize with Columbia LA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Louisiana or whatever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonographer Colleges

Clinical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Columbia LA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Columbia home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are many times less costly than traditional alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But just as with every sonography program you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal option for you.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Columbia LA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have relationships with Columbia LA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Louisiana healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Columbia LA home. Students who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Columbia LA area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
