Ultrasound Technician Job Summary

Destrehan LA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Destrehan LA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job tasks of an ultrasound tech can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Destrehan LA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools organize with Destrehan LA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Louisiana or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Programs

student attending online sonography class in Destrehan LAAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Destrehan LA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Destrehan home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are many times less costly than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But similarly as with every sonography school you are looking at, confirm that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Destrehan LA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Destrehan LA area. Clearly location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other variables that you should also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are some questions that you need ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Destrehan LA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound tech programs you are evaluating have relationships with Destrehan LA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Destrehan medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Louisiana healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Destrehan LA home. Those who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Destrehan LA area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.

    Destrehan, Louisiana

The community is named after Jean Noël Destréhan (1754–1823), who was twice President of the Orleans Territory's legislative council during his service there in 1806 and 1811. He was elected to the United States Senate when Louisiana became a state in 1812, but he resigned after a month. He served in the Louisiana State Senate from 1812 to 1817.[1]

Destrehan Plantation, his former home, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The main house has been restored and is one of the attractions on the Great River Road along the Mississippi River.

Before the Hale Boggs Memorial Bridge was completed connecting the communities of Destrehan and Luling, automobile ferries connected the towns. On October 20, 1976, one of these ferries, the George Prince, was struck by a tanker and capsized as it crossed the Mississippi River. Seventy-eight passengers and crew died.
