Raceland LA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Raceland LA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job duties of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Raceland LA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another option for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges sponsor through Raceland LA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Louisiana or whatever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonographer Programs

student attending online sonography class in Raceland LAAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Raceland LA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Raceland home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But just as with any sonographer program you are looking at, make sure that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Raceland LA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Raceland LA area. Of course location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Raceland LA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram tech programs you are reviewing have relationships with Raceland LA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional connections in the Raceland medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Louisiana healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Raceland LA home. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Raceland LA area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
