Ultrasound Tech Work Description

Welsh LA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Welsh LA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work functions of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Welsh LA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools sponsor with Welsh LA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Louisiana or whatever state you elect to work in.

Sonographer Online Degrees

So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Welsh LA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Welsh home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are often less expensive than on campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But just as with any sonographer college you are looking at, make sure that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Welsh LA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Welsh LA area. Certainly location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other variables that you should also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Welsh LA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound technician programs you are reviewing have partnerships with Welsh LA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist students and graduates develop professional connections in the Welsh medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Louisiana healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Welsh LA home. Those who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  program you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Welsh LA area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
