Ultrasound Technician Occupation Summary

Blandford MA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Blandford MA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work duties of a sonogram tech can include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Blandford MA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous schools sponsor through Blandford MA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Massachusetts or whatever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Blandford MAAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Blandford MA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Blandford home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently less expensive than on campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But similarly as with every sonography school you are reviewing, verify that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Blandford MA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Blandford MA area. Obviously location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous review of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Blandford MA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the sonogram technician programs you are evaluating have partnerships with Blandford MA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Blandford medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Massachusetts healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Blandford MA residence. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Blandford MA area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.

    Blandford, Massachusetts

Blandford is a town in Hampden County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 1,233 at the 2010 census.[1] It is part of the Springfield, Massachusetts Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is the home of the Blandford Ski Area.

Blandford was first settled in 1735 primarily by Scots-Irish settlers and was officially incorporated on November 10, 1741. Because of these Scots-Irish families, Blandford was originally called "New Glasgow" after Glasgow, Scotland, but was renamed "Blandford" at the time of incorporation. While the petition of incorporation from the settlers asked that the town be named "Glasgow", William Shirley, the newly appointed governor of the province of Massachusetts, ignored their request and named the town "Blandford" after the ship that brought him from England.[2]

The name change came at a cost to the townspeople. The people of Glasgow, Scotland, had promised the settlers a gift of a church bell if they named the town after their city. With the town now named Blandford, the bell was never sent.[2] Today, Glasgow Road near the center of Blandford is a silent reminder of these events.
