Sonogram Tech Job Description

Glen MT ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Glen MT clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job functions of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Glen MT ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Glen MT clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Montana or whichever state you decide to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Glen MTAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus facility. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Glen MT hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the balance of the classes and training can be attended online in your Glen home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are often more affordable than on-campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But similarly as with every sonography school you are considering, check that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Glen MT ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Glen MT area. Naturally location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound tech colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Glen MT employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the sonogram technician colleges you are assessing have associations with Glen MT hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Glen healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Montana healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Glen MT residence. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Glen MT area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

    Mad River Glen

Mad River Glen is a ski area in Fayston, Vermont. Located within the Green Mountain range, it sits in the Mad River Valley. Though not considered a large ski area, it has a vertical drop of 2,000 feet (610 m), which ranks 14th in New England,[1] and its terrain was ranked by Ski magazine as the most challenging on the east coast of the United States.[2]

Mad River Glen averages over 150 inches (380 cm) of snow a year and maintains a traditional form of New England skiing that emphasizes snow preservation on narrow trails with little grooming instead of man-made snow on wide boulevards. It has one of only two single chairlifts left in the country and does not allow snowboarding.[3]

It is one of a very limited number of ski cooperatives. Individuals purchase publicly available shares and attend regular "Town Hall" meetings, voting on issues regarding the area and management of the cooperative.
