Ultrasound Technician Job Summary

Huntley MT ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Huntley MT clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Huntley MT ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that almost all sonographer schools do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges organize through Huntley MT hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Montana or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Classes

student attending online sonography class in Huntley MTAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Huntley MT hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Huntley home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently more affordable than on-campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech program you are looking at, make sure that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Huntley MT ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Huntley MT area. Naturally location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Huntley MT health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram tech schools you are evaluating have partnerships with Huntley MT clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist students and graduates form professional relationships in the Huntley health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Montana healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Huntley MT home. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Huntley MT area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.

    Huntley, Montana

Huntley is a census-designated place (CDP) in Yellowstone County, Montana, United States. The population was 411 at the 2000 census. Huntley lent its name to the Huntley Project, a federal irrigation project that began delivering water to the arid district in 1907. Today, Huntley is an eastern suburb of Billings and is located east of Shepherd and west of Worden.

This settlement in arid Crow Indian country was named for S.O. Huntley, a partner in the stagecoach firm of Clark & Huntley. It was located at the head of navigation on the Yellowstone River. The first steamboat, the packet Josephine, arrived June 6, 1875, but river trade was infrequent. A U.S. post office was established in March 1878. The 1880 Census found only 37 people living in Huntley.

Surveying for a railroad led to the so-called "Baker Battle" between Sioux Indians and Army engineers in 1872. The Northern Pacific Railroad arrived in 1882, connecting the town to the new city of Billings. Three years later the town called "Huntley Station" had two stores, a hotel, and a blacksmith. German immigrants were prominent among the new settlers, who established Lutheran and German Methodist churches.
