Pelham NH sonographer performing ultrasoundSince you have made a decision to obtain an ultrasound technician degree near Pelham NH, the next step is to start the procedure of picking a college. First, you must find the right program that will provide the proper training to become a qualified professional. And because a number of states do require that ultrasound techs be either certified or licensed, depending on where you will practice you may also need preparation to pass a certification or licensing exam. So it’s extremely important that you investigate each college so that you can assess and compare your options. But just where does one start? A number of students will start by looking for schools that are within commuting distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Certainly cost and location need to be taken into account when arriving at a decision, but there are other critical factors also. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools have earned accreditation or if they provide internships. These and additional qualifications will be covered more in detail later in this post. But to start with, let’s go over what a sonogram tech does and the credentials and online education options that are offered.

Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Pelham NH ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Pelham NH clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job tasks of an ultrasound tech may include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Pelham NH ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools organize through Pelham NH clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in New Hampshire or whatever state you elect to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Pelham NHAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Pelham NH outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Pelham home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less costly than traditional options. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But similarly as with every sonographer program you are looking at, confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Pelham NH ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Pelham NH area. Certainly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound technician schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Pelham NH employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound tech colleges you are assessing have associations with Pelham NH hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Pelham health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the sonographer schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with New Hampshire healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Pelham NH home. Those who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Pelham NH area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
