Sonogram Tech Job Description

Bogota NJ ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Bogota NJ clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work functions of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Bogota NJ ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools sponsor with Bogota NJ hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in New Jersey or whichever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Bogota NJAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Bogota NJ hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Bogota home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently more affordable than on campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But just as with any sonography program you are reviewing, verify that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Bogota NJ ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Bogota NJ area. Obviously location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Bogota NJ employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the sonogram technician schools you are evaluating have associations with Bogota NJ hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Bogota medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Bogota NJ home. Those who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  program you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Bogota NJ area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.

    Bogota, New Jersey

Bogota is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough's population was 8,187,[9][10][11] reflecting a decline of 62 (-0.8%) from the 8,249 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 425 (+5.4%) from the 7,824 counted in the 1990 Census.[20]

Bogota was formed on November 14, 1894, from portions of Ridgefield Township, based on the results of a referendum held that day.[21] The borough was formed during the "Boroughitis" phenomenon then sweeping through Bergen County, in which 26 boroughs were formed in the county in 1894 alone.[22] Portions of Bogota were taken in 1895 to form part of the newly created Township of Teaneck. Bogota was named in honor of the Bogert family, which had been the first European settlers to occupy the area,[23] and may also be a portmanteau of Bogert and Banta, another early family, with an "O" added to ease pronunciation.[24][25][26]

The borough's name is pronounced /bəˈɡoʊtə/ buh-GOH-tə, unlike Bogotá, capital city of Colombia, whose name is accented on the final syllable.[25][27][28] Coincidentally, 1.54% of Bogota's residents are from Colombia.[29]
