Sonogram Tech Work Summary

Haskell NJ ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Haskell NJ clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job tasks of an ultrasound technician can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Haskell NJ ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges organize through Haskell NJ hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in New Jersey or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Haskell NJAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Haskell NJ hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Haskell home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently less expensive than on campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But just as with any ultrasound tech college you are looking at, confirm that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Haskell NJ ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Haskell NJ area. Certainly location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are other things that you should also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? Most sonogram tech colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Haskell NJ health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound technician schools you are evaluating have partnerships with Haskell NJ hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist students and graduates form professional relationships in the Haskell healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Haskell NJ residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  program you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Haskell NJ area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
