One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Monmouth Junction NJ area. Clearly location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are other variables that you should also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Monmouth Junction NJ health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the sonogram tech colleges you are reviewing have partnerships with Monmouth Junction NJ clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may assist students and graduates develop professional connections in the Monmouth Junction medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Monmouth Junction NJ residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Monmouth Junction NJ area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
