Sonographer Work Summary

Northfield NJ ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Northfield NJ hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work duties of an ultrasound technician may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Northfield NJ ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools organize through Northfield NJ hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in New Jersey or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Northfield NJAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus facility. Practical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Northfield NJ outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Northfield home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are often less costly than on-campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But similarly as with every sonography school you are looking at, check that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Northfield NJ ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Northfield NJ area. Obviously location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Northfield NJ health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound technician programs you are reviewing have partnerships with Northfield NJ hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Northfield healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Northfield NJ residence. Students who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Northfield NJ area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
