Ultrasound Technician Job Summary

Basom NY ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Basom NY clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work duties of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Basom NY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that most sonographer programs do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many schools organize through Basom NY hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in New York or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Schools

student attending online sonography class in Basom NYAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Basom NY outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Basom home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times less expensive than on campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech program you are looking at, verify that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Basom NY ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Basom NY area. Of course location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Basom NY employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the ultrasound technician programs you are interested in have associations with Basom NY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Basom health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Basom NY home. Students who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  college you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Basom NY area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.

    New York State Route 267

New York State Route 267 (NY 267) was an east–west state highway in the western portion of New York in the United States. It extended for 7.16 miles (11.52 km) from an intersection with NY 93 in the Erie County village of Akron to a junction with NY 77 in the Genesee County hamlet of Basom. Part of NY 267 in Genesee County passed through the Tonawanda Indian Reservation. The portion of NY 267 within Erie County was assigned c. 1935. NY 267 was extended east to NY 77 in Basom in the late 1930s, replacing New York State Route 77A, a spur leading from NY 77 to the eastern edge of the Tonawanda Reservation. The Erie County segment of the route was transferred from the state of New York to Erie County in April 1980, leading to the total removal of the NY 267 designation in August of that year.

NY 267 began at an intersection with NY 93 in the village of Akron in eastern Erie County. The route headed eastward, following John Street through downtown Akron. NY 267 broke from John Street just four blocks later. While the street continued east to serve Akron Airport, the route turned northeast to follow Bloomingdale Road out of the village. The route continued through gradually less developed areas of the town of Newstead, intersecting with County Route 250 (CR 250, named Scotland Road). NY 267 crossed into Genesee County soon afterward.[5][6]

In the Genesee County town of Alabama, NY 267 made a slight turn to the north as it entered the Tonawanda Indian Reservation. Once inside the reservation, the route remained on a north-northeasterly alignment for about 0.5 miles (0.8 km) to a junction with Parker Road. At this point, the highway turned to the east, progressing across the reservation. At an intersection with Reuben Road 1.25 miles (2.01 km) later, NY 267 turned to the north for another 0.5 miles (0.8 km) before it exited the reservation. The route continued for roughly 1 mile (1.6 km) to the hamlet of Basom, where it terminated at an intersection with NY 77.[5][6]
