Victory Mills NY sonographer performing ultrasoundNow that you have decided to obtain an ultrasound technician degree near Victory Mills NY, the next step is to start the procedure of picking a school. First, you must find the ideal program that will furnish the appropriate instruction to become a qualified professional. And because a number of states do require that sonographers be either licensed or certified, depending on where you will practice you may also need to be prepared to pass a certification or licensing examination. So it’s extremely important that you research each program in order to assess and compare your alternatives. But exactly where does one begin? A number of students will start by searching for colleges that are within driving distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Of course location and cost should be considered when making a decision, but there are additional significant factors as well. For instance, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they offer internship programs. These and other qualifications will be covered more in detail later in this post. Ultrasound Tech Occupation Description

Victory Mills NY ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Victory Mills NY hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work tasks of a sonogram tech can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Victory Mills NY ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools sponsor through Victory Mills NY clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in New York or whichever state you choose to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Victory Mills NYAs aforementioned, virtually all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Victory Mills NY hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Victory Mills home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are many times more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But just as with any ultrasound tech school you are looking at, check that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Victory Mills NY ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the process of assessing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Victory Mills NY area. Of course location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive examination of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Victory Mills NY employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the sonogram technician schools you are evaluating have partnerships with Victory Mills NY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Victory Mills medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the sonographer schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Victory Mills NY home. Students who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  school you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Victory Mills NY area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.

    Victory ship

The Victory ship was a class of cargo ship produced in large numbers by North American shipyards during World War II to replace losses caused by German submarines. They were a more modern design compared to the earlier Liberty ship, were slightly larger and had more powerful steam turbine engines giving higher speed to allow participation in high speed convoys and make them more difficult targets for German U-boats. A total of 531 Victory ships were built.[3][4]

One of the first acts of the United States War Shipping Administration upon its formation in February 1942 was to commission the design of what came to be known as the Victory class. Initially designated EC2-S-AP1, where EC2 = Emergency Cargo, type 2 (Load Waterline Length between 400 and 450 feet (120 and 140 m)), S = steam propulsion with AP1 = one aft propeller (EC2-S-C1 had been the designation of the Liberty ship design), it was changed to VC2-S-AP1 before the name "Victory Ship" was officially adopted on 28 April 1943. The ships were built under the Emergency Shipbuilding program. [1]

The design was an enhancement of the Liberty ship, which had been successfully produced in extraordinary numbers. Victory ships were slightly larger than Liberty ships, 14 feet (4.3 m) longer at 455 feet (139 m), 6 feet (1.8 m) wider at 62 ft (19 m), and drawing one foot more at 28 feet (8.5 m) loaded.[1] Displacement was up just under 1,000 tons, to 15,200. With a raised forecastle and a more sophisticated hull shape to help achieve the higher speed, they had a quite different appearance from Liberty ships.
