Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

Westbury NY ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Westbury NY clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job tasks of a sonogram technician may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for further testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Westbury NY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another option for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many schools organize with Westbury NY hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in New York or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Westbury NYAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Westbury NY outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Westbury home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are many times less expensive than on-campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech program you are reviewing, make sure that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right option for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Westbury NY ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Westbury NY area. Clearly location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification also. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Westbury NY health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the ultrasound technician programs you are reviewing have relationships with Westbury NY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Westbury medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Westbury NY residence. Those who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Westbury NY area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.

    Westbury, New York

Westbury is a village in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 15,146 at the 2010 census. The Incorporated Village of Westbury is in the Town of North Hempstead. It is located about 18 miles (40 km) east of Manhattan.

Westbury's Jericho Turnpike, which provides connection to Mineola and Syosset as well as to the Long Island Expressway (or LIE), was once a trail used by the Massapequa Indians. As far back as the 17th century, it served as a divider between the early homesteads north of the Turnpike and the great plains to its south. Today, it serves as a state highway complex.

In 1657, Captain John Seaman purchased 12,000 acres (49 km2) from the Algonquian Tribe of the Massapequa Indians. In 1658, Richard Stites and his family built their homestead in this area.[citation needed] Theirs was the only family farm until an English Quaker, Edmond Titus, and his son Samuel, joined them and settled in an area of Hempstead Plains known to us today as the Village of Westbury. In 1675 Henry Willis, also an English Quaker, named the area "Westbury", after Westbury, Wiltshire, his hometown in England.[4] Other Quaker families who were also seeking a place to freely express their religious beliefs joined the Tituses and Willises. The first Society of Friends meeting house was built in 1700. The early history of Westbury and that of the Friends are so interconnected that they are essentially the same.
