Ultrasound Technician Job Summary

Erwin NC ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Erwin NC clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work tasks of a sonogram technician can include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Erwin NC ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges set up through Erwin NC clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in North Carolina or whatever state you decide to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Erwin NCAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off campus facility. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Erwin NC hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Erwin home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are often more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be lessened as well. But just as with any sonographer program you are considering, confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the right option for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Erwin NC ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Erwin NC area. Certainly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other variables that you should also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Erwin NC employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are evaluating have partnerships with Erwin NC hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist graduates and students form professional connections in the Erwin medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with North Carolina healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Erwin NC residence. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  program you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Erwin NC area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
