Ultrasound Technician Work Summary

Clinton OK ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Clinton OK hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work tasks of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Clinton OK ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that most sonographer programs do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools organize with Clinton OK clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Oklahoma or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Programs

student attending online sonography class in Clinton OKAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Clinton OK hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Clinton home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are often more affordable than traditional options. Costs for study materials and commuting may be lessened as well. But similarly as with every sonography college you are looking at, confirm that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Clinton OK ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Clinton OK area. Naturally location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Clinton OK employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are interested in have associations with Clinton OK clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Clinton medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the sonographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Oklahoma healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Clinton OK home. Students who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Clinton OK area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.

Because of governmental stipulations that an Indian could sell no more than one half of a 160-acre (0.6 km2) allotment, the men made plans to purchase 320 acres (1.3 km2) from four different Indians (Hays, Shoe-Boy, Nowahy, and Night Killer) and paid them each $2,000 for 80 acres (320,000 m2) to begin the small settlement of Washita Junction.

Congressional approval for the sale was granted in 1902 and Washita Junction quickly developed.[3] The first businesses were the office of the Custer County Chronicle newspaper and the First National Bank building. When a post office was started, the postal department would not accept the name of Washita Junction; so the town was named for the late Judge Clinton Irwin.

Clinton was served by the Frisco Railroad and Rock Island. It was also the eastern terminus of the Clinton, Oklahoma, and Western Railroad Company, which lay track westward to Hemphill County, Texas. Once in Hemphill County, a second similarly-named railroad, the Clinton-Oklahoma-Western Railroad Company of Texas, joined with Pampa in Gray County, Texas. Both of these companies were soon leased and purchased by the Panhandle and Santa Fe Railway, which held them until disestablishment in 1965.[4]
