Ultrasound Tech Job Summary

Nicoma Park OK ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Nicoma Park OK hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job functions of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Nicoma Park OK ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools organize through Nicoma Park OK hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Oklahoma or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Nicoma Park OKAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Nicoma Park OK hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Nicoma Park home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are often less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But just as with every sonographer program you are reviewing, make sure that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Nicoma Park OK ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Nicoma Park OK area. Of course location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other factors that you should also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Nicoma Park OK health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the sonogram tech schools you are interested in have relationships with Nicoma Park OK clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Nicoma Park medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Oklahoma healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Nicoma Park OK home. Those who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Nicoma Park OK area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
