Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Vera OK ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Vera OK hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work functions of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Vera OK ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete. Another alternative for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Vera OK hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Oklahoma or whichever state you decide to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Vera OKAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Vera OK outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the balance of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Vera home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently less costly than on-campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But just as with any ultrasound tech school you are looking at, confirm that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Vera OK ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Vera OK area. Certainly location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Vera OK employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the ultrasound technician schools you are interested in have relationships with Vera OK clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Vera health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Oklahoma healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Vera OK residence. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Vera OK area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.

Other preferred skills include technical proficiency, the ability to remain calm when faced with an angry or anxious patient and the ability to communicate in a clear and compassionate manner.
