Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

Burnside PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Burnside PA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work duties of an ultrasound technician can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Burnside PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to complete. Another option for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools set up through Burnside PA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Colleges

So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Burnside PA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Burnside home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are often less costly than traditional alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But just as with any sonographer college you are looking at, confirm that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Burnside PA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Burnside PA area. Of course location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Burnside PA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound technician colleges you are evaluating have associations with Burnside PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Burnside healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Burnside PA home. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  school you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Burnside PA area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
